The Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, has expressed concern over the current state of the country, highlighting widespread institutional decay, inconsistent policies, and ineffective execution, despite various government interventions.
Achebe made these remarks on Thursday during the 27th convocation ceremony of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL).
He noted that the conditions Nigeria is currently facing align with warnings given two decades ago by Professor Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, adding that the issues have only worsened over time.
“Nigeria has suffered institutional neglect, policy somersaults, and poor implementation,” Achebe said.
The traditional ruler emphasized that these persistent problems have significantly hampered the country’s ability to build essential human capital. Meanwhile, he pointed out, other African nations are making notable progress in embracing digital innovation and technological development.
