The Nigerian government has officially demanded that X.com remove an anti-President Bola Tinubu tweet within 24 hours. The tweet, posted by the controversial activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, criticized President Tinubu’s claim made in Brazil that corruption has ended under his administration.

Sowore’s post reads: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

In a letter addressed to the Chairman and CEO of X.com in Bastrop County, Texas, the federal government argued that Sowore’s tweet is misleading and deliberately promotes an agenda that could incite violence, cybercrime, hate speech, and seeks to undermine and defame President Tinubu.

The Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS) issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the removal of the tweet, warning that it poses a threat to national security, stirs unrest, and damages Nigeria’s reputation internationally.

Signed by Mr. B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DSS Director General, the letter stated that Sowore’s message not only embarrasses President Tinubu but also has the potential to spark widespread disorder.

Dated September 6, 2025, the correspondence informed X.com’s CEO that the tweet violates Section 51 of the Criminal Code Act Cap 77, which forbids the publication of false information.

It also breaches Sections 19, 22, and 24 of the Cyber Crime Act 2025, which criminalize the dissemination of fake news, misleading or deceptive content, and the posting of offensive material intended to humiliate or provoke ethnic, religious, or tribal hatred online.

Furthermore, the DSS emphasized that both Sowore and the platform through which the tweet was circulated are legally accountable and liable for the offense.

“The author and purveyor of the inflammatory online Publication against Mr. President is very much aware that the publication is also prohibited by Section 2 of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022 and other relevant Laws of Nigeria.

“It is not in doubt that the words employed by Mr. Omoyele Sowore is misleading information, online harassment and abuse willful intention of furthering and ideology, capable of serious harm, hate speech, cause disunity, discredit the President of Nigeria in the comity of Nations to damage the image of Nigeria and cause threat to National Security of the Country,” it said.

The DSS demanded that the X.com corporation must as a matter of it’s own policy, pull down the tweet and it’s attendant re-tweet.
