The Nigerian government has disclosed that 6,000 individuals from the Niger Republic acquired National Identity Numbers (NIN) illegally.
A credible source within the presidency shared that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed this while addressing the Federal Executive Council on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
The minister also confirmed that Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has removed the 6,000 NINs issued to citizens of Niger from its records.
“The minister mentioned that NIMC is cleaning up the database after finding over 6,000 NINs obtained by individuals from Niger, but they have now been deleted,” the source noted.
The source further mentioned that Olubunmi was appointed to a special panel overseeing the nation’s humanitarian ministry, which manages conditional cash transfers and other welfare programs.
NIMC’s Director-General, Bisoye Coker-Odusote, verified the update, stating that the agency is committed to ensuring the integrity and precision of government disbursements, especially for humanitarian purposes.
In other news, it is important to recall that the problem of counterfeit and illegal NINs is not a new one. On October 13, 2022, the Defence Headquarters in Abuja reported that Nigerian troops, alongside the police and Nigeria Immigration Service operatives, apprehended two suspected fake NIMC officials.
The Director of Defence Media Operations at the time, Major General Musa Danmadami, explained in a statement, “The suspects had been at the Gagamari IDP camp in Niger, registering non-Nigerians there.”
Additionally, reports have surfaced about fraudulent agents charging non-Nigerian nationals, mostly from neighboring countries like the Niger Republic, to obtain Nigerian NINs.
