The case involving musician Bloody Civilian and Pastor Helen Ukpabio has been scheduled for hearing before a high court in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.
Due to remarks the singer made on social media, the preacher is suing her for N200 billion.
According to Liberty Gospel Church founder Pastor Helen Ukpabio, Bloody Civilian defamed her by claiming that she advocated for parents to burn their children alive.
Bloody Civilian made this claim in a comment on a post on X (previously Twitter) commemorating Pastor Ukpabio’s 60th birthday. A YouTube documentary that criticized Pastor Ukpabio’s practices was also uploaded by the musician.
Bloody Civilian is being sued by Pastor Ukpabio and her daughter Imaobong Elijah for N200 billion in damages and a public apology. They call the remarks “reckless” and “libellous,” asserting that they have caused distress and harmed their reputation.
In an amusing response to the complaint, Bloody Civilian joked that in order to pay the damages, they would need to provide other services, such as comedy. But as of yet, no formal answer has been submitted to the court.
The court has given Bloody Civilian 30 days to show up or face having a judgment rendered against her.
The claimants are requesting a declaration that the posts were disrespectful and defamatory.
The court stated in a letter of summons, “To: Emoseh Khamafu alias ”Bloody Civilian”, 53 Chief Bamidele Eletu Avenue, Osapa London, Eti-Osa local government area of Lagos state, outside jurisdiction of this honourable court.
“You are hereby commanded that within thirty (30) days after the service of this Writ on you, inclusive of the day of such service, you do cause an appearance to be entered for you at the suit of claimants and take notice that in default, the claimants may proceed and judgement be given in your absence.”
Barr. Ekei E. Koffreh, Esq. signed the instrument, which was dated January 3, 2025.
Emoseh’s grave accusations against Lady Ukpabio on X (previously Twitter) that she was involved in child witch deaths sparked the debate.
Imaobong Ukpabio called Emoseh’s remarks harmful and untrue and requested that she take them back. Emoseh, however, responded to the demand sarcastically, refusing to back down. Since then, Emoseh has received an official letter from Lady Ukpabio’s legal team claiming that her tweets have damaged their client’s reputation. According to the letter, Emoseh’s accusations were unfounded and intended only to harm and mock Lady Ukpabio.
