Investors in the Nigerian equities market have suffered a combined loss of N5.45 trillion as the bearish trend on the Nigerian Exchange Limited, NGX, entered its eighth consecutive trading session on Thursday.

The decline has persisted since Tuesday, August 11, 2026, with stocks listed on the exchange recording sustained losses.

The market had already recorded a N3.8 trillion loss across four consecutive bearish sessions last week.

Between Monday and Thursday this week, investors lost an additional N1.65 trillion as the downward movement continued.

Combined, the losses recorded over the eight trading sessions have reached N5.45 trillion, erasing earlier gains recorded by the market.

Thursday’s market performance

The NGX remained in negative territory on Thursday, with investors losing another N440 billion amid continued profit-taking involving major large- and mid-cap stocks.

Market capitalisation fell by 0.30 per cent, dropping from N155.417 trillion at the start of trading to N154.977 trillion at the close.

Haldane McCall emerged as the day’s biggest gainer, rising by 9.38 per cent to close at N3.85.

International Energy Insurance, however, recorded the largest decline among the listed stocks, falling by 9.85 per cent to finish at N4.30.

The insurance sector has also continued to face pressure following the implementation of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025.

The development has weighed on insurance stocks, particularly after the National Insurance Commission revoked the licences of Universal Insurance and Nigeria Reinsurance in recent weeks.
