Former head of State and the founding father of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), General Yakubu Gowon, pointed out that Nigerian students initially resisted the introduction of the NYSC.

He commended the leaders of the Scheme for preserving the vision behind its creation.

He said “the NYSC was greeted with strong opposition from Nigerian students across the country at inception.”

However, he added that the Scheme had not only overcome those early doubts but had evolved into a nationally recognized and accepted program that promotes national unity, integration, development, job creation, and youth empowerment in Nigeria.

Gowon made these remarks when the newly appointed Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited him at his home in Asokoro, Abuja.

He acknowledged the significant contributions of Corps members to Nigeria’s development over the more than 50 years since the Scheme’s establishment.

He also praised the NYSC’s deployment policy, which exposes Corps Members to diverse cultures and communities by assigning them to States and locations outside of their own.

While congratulating Brigadier General Nafiu on his new role, Gowon encouraged him to continue building on the achievements of his predecessors and to lead the NYSC to even greater success, wishing him well.

Brigadier General Nafiu referred to the creation of the NYSC in 1973 as a divine initiative that has greatly benefited the country, impacting generations of Nigerians.

He explained that the purpose of his visit was to seek General Gowon’s blessings, expressing gratitude for his paternal role in the Scheme and requesting his continued guidance.

The NYSC was created by the Gowon administration as part of the post-war efforts to reconcile, rebuild, and rehabilitate Nigeria after the devastating 30-month-long civil war.
