Nigerians lament as Cooking Gas Prices hit record high, NBS Reports

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that cooking gas prices in Nigeria have reached an unprecedented high. According to the NBS’s latest Price Watch report, the average price of refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) rose to N8,167.43 in May 2025, while the 12.5kg refill increased to N20,709.11.

The prices represent a 3.57% increase for the 5kg refill and a 2.18% rise for the 12.5kg refill from April 2025. On a year-on-year basis, the prices have spiked by 10.10% and 32.52% respectively. The NBS stated, “The average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased from N7,885.60 in April 2025 to N8,167.43 in May 2025. On a year-on-year basis, it rose by 10.10%

The price build-up reflects a steady month-on-month climb since the start of the year. The 5kg refill was sold at N7,040.94 in January 2025, increasing to N7,072.10 in February, N7,322.49 in March, N7,885.60 in April, and N8,167.43 in May.

At the state level, Abia recorded the highest average price for 5kg at N9,181.20, while Delta topped the chart for the 12.5kg refill with an average price of N23,356.46. A zonal breakdown showed households in the South-South paid the most, with an average of N8,760.51 for 5kg and N22,026.26 for 12.5kg.

The steady rise in LPG costs has resulted in increased financial burdens for households, with many struggling to afford the essential commodity. The NBS data highlights the need for measures to address the rising costs and ensure affordable access to cooking gas for Nigerian households
