Social media was utilised by Nigerians to express their outrage after the country’s name was inscribed in Hausa on the proposed BRICS currency.

Nigeria and 12 other countries formally joined BRICS as partners on Thursday, October 24, deepening their economic relationship with the group.

At the current BRICS summit, which is taking place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024, this declaration was made.

Nigeria’s entry follows a notable uptick in BRICS countries’ foreign capital inflows, which increased by 189% to $1.27 billion in the first half of 2024 from $438.72 million in the same time in 2023.

Additionally, Nigeria’s name was inscribed in Hausa on the BRICS foreign reserve currency, which has not yet been revealed, stoking rumours that the group may have acknowledged Hausa as Nigeria’s official language.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s top adviser, Bashir Ahmad, tweeted:

Since Hausa is the most widely spoken language in Nigeria, many Nigerians have come out against the plan, while others have applauded it.
