The protest led by a group of lawyers demanding an investigation into corruption allegations against Farouk Ahmed, Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), continued on Wednesday as the group submitted a formal petition to the House of Representatives.

This move follows a similar submission to the Senate on Tuesday, where lawmakers reportedly pledged to begin a formal inquiry into the matter.

The petition, authored by the protesting lawyers, outlines serious accusations against Ahmed, including large-scale financial mismanagement, abuse of power, and conflicts of interest. They called for a swift and thorough investigation into the alleged misconduct.

Speaking during the demonstration, Samuel Ihensekhien, representing the protesters, said: “We are here again to demand accountability and transparency from Mr. Farouk Ahmed. His actions are a clear betrayal of the public trust, and it’s time for him to face the consequences.”

One of the key claims made in the petition is that over $5 million in public funds were allegedly diverted to fund the foreign education of Ahmed’s four children.

Another concern raised was that Ahmed’s son, Faisal, is reportedly employed by Oando PLC—a company regulated by NMDPRA raising potential ethical and legal concerns regarding a conflict of interest.

“This is a clear case of corruption and abuse of office. We will not stand idly by while public officials loot our treasury and undermine our institutions,” Ihensekhien added.

The petitioners are pressing for Ahmed’s immediate suspension, a full investigation, and prosecution if found guilty. They also called for a nationwide freeze on his assets.

In addition, they urged the National Assembly to take prompt action: recommending Ahmed’s removal from office, working with global security bodies such as Interpol to ensure his extradition if necessary, and initiating reforms in how key appointments are made within oil and gas regulatory bodies.

“We demand that the National Assembly takes bold action to restore public trust in our institutions and ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions,” another leader of the protesters, Dr. S. M Oyeghe, said.

The petition is supported by several civil society groups, including the Situation Room for Oil Sector Reforms, the Concerned Young Professionals Network, and the Coalition for Public Accountability (COPA).
