A human rights attorney, Christopher Chidera, has asserted that the ongoing incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), lacks legitimate legal grounds and appears to stem from his vocal opposition to the Nigerian authorities.

While speaking to members of the press in Abuja, Chidera condemned the extended detention as a form of retribution against Kanu for challenging those in power, emphasizing that no substantial legal justification exists for his continued imprisonment.

He argued that Kanu’s confinement is part of a calculated strategy aimed at weakening his support base within the Igbo community.

“The government has yet to bring charges against Kanu for alleging that former President Muhammadu Buhari had died, a claim many dismissed as propaganda. If he is spreading such outrageous falsehoods, why hasn’t he been charged for misinformation?

“They don’t understand that Nnamdi Kanu doesn’t need propaganda to win the loyalty of his people. He has the truth, he has consistency, and he has suffered more in pursuit of freedom than all of them combined,” Chidera said.

The lawyer also called on the African continent to foster unity and encourage independent thinking, noting that the root of many of Africa’s persistent challenges lies in intellectual passivity rather than the legacy of colonialism.

“Africa’s biggest curse isn’t colonialism, it’s our refusal to think. Until Black Africans learn to reason critically, challenge authority, and demand evidence over emotion, we will remain trapped, not by foreign hands, but by our own mental laziness,” he said.
