On Wednesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja viewed a video recording presented as evidence showing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), allegedly issuing provocative instructions linked to terrorist activities.

According to the prosecution, Kanu’s statements in the video directly incited violent actions in the South-East region.

A Department of State Services (DSS) operative identified in court as BBB testified that Kanu’s broadcasts led to widespread destruction and unrest in the area.

The DSS agent gave this testimony while being examined by the lead prosecuting lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.

The controversial broadcast was stored on a flash drive, which was accepted into evidence by the court along with a certificate confirming its authenticity, despite resistance from the defense team.

During the court session, the footage showed Kanu speaking to his followers, referring to the area as “the blessed land of Biafra.”

In his speech, Kanu announced the creation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and called on supporters to protect their land from what he described as “Fulani domination.”

He also issued warnings to political leaders in the region against collaborating with opposing forces and declared: “No Fulani parading as herdsman shall be allowed in our land. If you are an agent of the Fulani, turn your way this evening.”

Earlier, the court also accepted a letter dated June 17, 2021, written by former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), accusing Kanu of terrorism, incitement, and murder.

The document, which was addressed to the DSS, was introduced without challenge and labeled as Exhibit PWF.

Referring to the letter, the DSS witness claimed that Kanu’s broadcasts were followed by organized attacks targeting police stations and correctional centers, leading to casualties and property damage.

Kanu is currently on trial before Justice James Omotosho on terrorism-related charges.

He was initially apprehended in 2017 over allegations of attempting to disintegrate the Nigerian state.
