The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, has refuted rumours of a division inside the party, stressing that his leadership remains the only genuine one.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday in Abuja, Dr. Ahmed addressed concerns over recent claims of a section led by Boniface Aniebonam, which claimed to have taken control of the party and staged a convention that elected Agbo Major as the national chairman along with other national executives.
Ahmed explained that the NNPP has not recently convened a national convention or appointed a new National Working Committee.
According to him, the present NWC was established in 2020, under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in accordance with Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022.
He also accused former party members, purportedly backed by certain politicians concerned about the opposition as the 2027 elections approach, of attempting to destroy the party’s legitimacy. He characterised the Aniebonam-led faction as people who have consistently lost court battles around the country and are now looking for importance.
“Let me inform you and through you, the world, that there is only one NNPP under my leadership as its National Chairman, and our NWC, recognized by law and registered with INEC, is the true NNPP,” Dr. Ahmed declared.
He emphasised that the party’s only official logo, as recognised by law, is red, white, and red, with a book and academic cap in the centre and the motto “Education For All.”
Ahmed further condemned the faction for disregarding court judgements, noting that an April 2024 Federal High Court ruling had already rejected them as impostors.
He also blasted their latest gathering in Lagos as an illegal convention, despite a court order prohibiting it.
The NNPP Chairman urged INEC to guarantee that political parties are monitored in compliance with the law, emphasising the significance of upholding the rule of law in preserving a healthy democracy.
He encouraged the media to appropriately portray the party by showing the legitimate emblem, as approved by INEC, and denied misleading assertions about the party’s leadership.
“We want to clarify once again that the NNPP does not operate from Apapa, and no convention was held in any hotel lobby in Lagos.
“Our NWC was inaugurated in April 2022 for a four-year term, and our headquarters remains in Abuja, in full compliance with the law.”
