The Federal High Court’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Division’s Justice M.A. Hassan has issued an interim injunction prohibiting the Boniface Aneibonam-led faction of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) from holding state conventions and local, state, and zonal congresses in the party’s name.
The decision was the result of an ex parte motion against Aneibonam, 19 other people, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that was submitted by the NNPP, led by National Chairman Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, along with 19 members of the party’s National Working Committee.
Justice Hassan ordered Aneibonam and his companions to abstain from all official activities and from posing as NNPP representatives in suit number FCT/HC/CV/5518/2024. Until a move for interlocutory relief on notice is decided, the injunction will stay in effect.
Additionally, the court barred INEC from identifying or answering any correspondence from the defendants or from keeping an eye on or overseeing their operations while using the NNPP’s name. In any official capacity, INEC has been directed to stop interacting with the faction.
A hearing on the request has been scheduled for January 27, 2025.
Ladipo Johnson, the National Publicity Secretary for the NNPP, responded to the court’s finding with joy, calling it a major step in reaffirming the party’s legitimate leadership.
Johnson said in a statement that Aneibonam and his colleagues were serving as opposition party operatives. “Dr. Aneibonam and his co-travelers were expelled by the party, and since then, they have been attempting to confuse the public about the rightful leadership, logo, and colors of the NNPP,” he said.
Johnson added that the defendants and their representatives are essentially prohibited from acting in any capacity under the NNPP’s name by the court’s decision. “In a similar vein, the court prohibited INEC from monitoring their unlawful congresses or receiving or replying to any correspondence from them,” he continued.
Despite the diversions, he reaffirmed that the party is still focused. “We hope they will appear in court to ensure their unlawful use of the party’s name is permanently halted,” Johnson concluded.
