Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has declared that he will use the judicial system to bring the Osun local government issue to a rational end.
Governor Adeleke praised the Appeal Court’s decision on Monday, saying it finally reaffirmed the legitimacy of the duly elected and sworn-in PDP chairman and council members. His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, made the announcement.
ZINGTIE recounted that on February 10 and June 13, 2025, the state branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which controlled Osun State government, had clashed over two rulings from the Appeal Court, Akure Division.
The PDP argued that the ruling never reinstated the fired APC officials, despite the Osun APC’s insistence that the February 10 ruling reinstated local government chairmen who were elected on the party’s platform and removed by the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo after the October 22, 2022 local government election in the state,
The state governor held another local government election on February 22, 2025, and PDP candidates won every seat due to the weight of the Appeal Court’s decision.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson on Monday, the governor praised the Osun people’s patience and dedication to due process, pointing out that the most recent ruling disproved any falsehood regarding the reinstatement of previously fired chairmen and confirmed the validity of the PDP chairmen and council members.
He said, “Unlike the opposition, we are people of due process. The latest judgement is being served on all relevant stakeholders at state and national level. Our expectation is a quick restoration of normalcy in line with the law.
“I appreciate the deep love for peace and unity as demonstrated by the PDP Chairmen and councillors of the 30 local government and area councils since their swearing in. Your patience and support for the law has paid off.”
While urging people and communities to continue acting in a peaceful manner, the governor also complimented security agencies for their dedication to maintaining Osun State’s peace and order.
“Evil plots against our dear state on all fronts have been foiled. We must continue to remain peaceful and never allow agents of violence and enemies of the people to drag the state into violence and backwardness,” Adeleke was quoted as saying.
In the meantime, the Osun APC cautioned the Osun PDP to cease inciting the public in a statement signed by its legal adviser, Adegoke Ogunsola, as the June 13 appellate court ruling did not uphold the February 10 ruling.
According to Osun APC, only the Supreme Court has the authority to make a ruling.
Osun APC said that the PDP has used a variety of desperate tactics to muddy the waters over the interpretation of the two Appeal Court rulings, while urging Governor Adeleke to curb his purported desperation.
Adegoke in the statement said “The latest acts of mischief unleashed by the Governor and his party men were caused by the latest decision of the Court of Appeal of 13th June, 2025 refusing to relist the appeal of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The major reason for the refusal to relist the appeal is that the same Court of Appeal had decided the same issues raised by the Appeal in Appeal No. CA/AK/270/2022 in its judgment of 10th February, 2025 which reinstated the Chairmen and Councilors elected under the platform of APC during the October 15th 2022 local government elections.
“It must be recalled that by the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered on 10th February, 2025, the Court expressly allowed the appeal of APC against the judgment of the Federal High Court which nullified the election of the Chairmen and Councilors elected on the platform of APC. The Court of Appeal found the appeal lodged by APC to be meritorious and expressly allowed same and awarded costs in favour of the APC and against the PDP.
“By the above and contrary to the misinterpretation that the government of Mr. Jackson Ademola Adeleke has been trying to foist on Nigerians in general and the security agencies in particular, it is imperative to set out the prayers contained in the Amended Notice of Appeal and Brief of Argument of the APC which were found to be meritorious and allowed by the Court of Appeal thusly.”
The Attorney General of Federation, the Minister of Justice, the Inspector General of Police, and the leaders of other security agencies in the nation should call Adeleke to order and not allow him to use the democratically elected Chairmen and Councilors in the state to seize legitimate local government administrations, the Osun APC said, accusing Adeleke and the Osun PDP of deceitfully misleading the public.
“Any attempt by the government of Governor Adeleke and its PDP desperadoes to unleash mayhem as they did on 17th February, 2025 which led to the unfortunate assassination of Honourable Remi Abass and six other leaders and members of APC, shall be vehemently resisted legally and may lead to breakdown of law and order,” the party warned.
