The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has invoked a no-pay-no-work policy on the federal government due to the continuous delay of salaries of its members. According to ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna, lecturers have consistently been paid late since departing from the Integrated Payment and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“We don’t get paid the way other workers get paid. It is either we are paid 10 days into a new month,” Piwuna stated. With the economic challenges in the country, it has not been easy for ASUU members. The union’s decision to invoke the no-pay-no-work policy means lecturers will boycott classes pending the time that salaries are paid.
ASUU members are struggling to cope with the delayed salaries, particularly with the upcoming Sallah celebration. “Look at June now; we have not been paid; our members can’t celebrate Sallah properly,” Piwuna added

The union’s action follows the government’s announcement of removing academic and non-academic staff members of higher institutions from the IPPIS platform, which ASUU had opposed. Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions, also criticised the government, saying, “University workers are simply treated like second-class citizens.”
The federal government had promised to use the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) as a payment platform for salaries and entitlements of members of ASUU, but this has not resolved the issue. ASUU had previously threatened to invoke the no-pay-no-work policy if the government failed to pay withheld salaries and earned academic allowances.
