Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has denied rumours that some state political figures appointed him governor of Rivers State.
However, Wike insisted that he fought his way to power even if he had political backing from some politicians.
He asserted that he appointed Siminalayi Fubara as the present governor of Rivers State, drawing a comparison between his political ascent and that of the latter.
Wike made the comments on Friday in Port Harcourt at a civic dinner he hosted in honour of a few of his supporters in Rivers State.
The announcement follows the social media resurgence of old films purporting to show former Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan introducing Wike to former Governor Peter Odili and certain political figures in Rivers State as the preferred successor to then-Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Due to the state’s political turmoil, which has put the FCT Minister at odds with his replacement, Fubara, the videos reappeared during a verbal altercation between Wike and Odili.
Wike, who feels the former governor ought to have avoided picking sides and instead acted as a father figure by handling the state’s political issue, was enraged by Odili’s open support for Governor Fubara.
Wike said, “You didn’t give me. To be governor of Rivers State 2014, I fought for the party structure. I took it from Magnus Abe, yes, I did.
“So you can’t say you made me Governor. Nobody, I don’t want to make comments about certain people, I won’t do that.
“You Magnus, all of you, Victor Giadom, I fought you people, took the party structure.
“So, nobody can say I brought Wike, I dashed you. Nobody can say that. But it would be unfair to me, to Almighty God, for me to say nobody supported me.
“No you can’t say that. You need people’s support, but not to say you gave me.”
Wike’s rise to the position of Governor of Rivers State in 2015 was attributed in large part to former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife Patience Jonathan, and Peter Odili.
Since Jonathan and his wife had a falling out with former Governor Amaechi at the time, they threw their support behind Wike, who had been Amaechi’s Chief of Staff and later as Minister of State for Education under Jonathan.
