Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called for the North to wait until 2031 before running for president, but the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and other notable northern leaders have rejected this idea.

According to the northern leaders, President Bola Tinubu cannot be forced to be re-elected in 2027.

At the APC national secretariat in Abuja, Ganduje had made the comments while hosting a team from the Tinubu Northern Youth Forum and the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Center.

He maintained that since Muhammadu Buhari, a president from the north, had served two terms, Tinubu should likewise spend eight years out of fairness.

The ACF and other Northern political leaders, however, disagreed with this position.

Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, told reporters that Ganduje’s remarks were a reflection of the “cult-like” nature of the president, where complete loyalty is required.

He emphasized that voters cannot be coerced.

“He or she or party members cannot influence voters by force. So, what he said was an opinion, and it’s up to the voters to endorse, reject, or modify it. In 2015, we were sold a dummy of anti-corruption. We were sold a dummy of many things, and people have realized that it wasn’t true. Then, of course, the Renewed Hope came in 2023, and the hope is turning into a nightmare,” Muhammad-Baba stated.

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, similarly questioned Tinubu’s prospects in a post titled “2027: South West, Tinubu’s supporters playing with fire – Part 1” that he shared on his verified X handle.

The article warned that Tinubu might follow in the footsteps of previous President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost reelection in 2015, and implied that his relationship with the North had drastically worsened less than two years into his term.
