Elder statesman Usman Bugaje has expressed deep concern over the worsening condition of Northern Nigeria, stressing that Northerners are experiencing severe hardships that require urgent and collective efforts to prevent total collapse ¹.

He observed that the region is plagued by poverty, insecurity, and corruption, which have continued to undermine its development, with nearly 60% of students in tertiary institutions unable to return to school due to financial constraints.

According to Bugaje, “For over 25 years of Nigeria’s democracy, poverty has more than doubled in the region, with over 33 million Nigerians facing starvation.”

Bugaje explained that the country’s currency has lost significant value, rendering the minimum wage insufficient to purchase basic necessities, highlighting the collapsing economy.

Speaking at the Arewa Movement for Good Governance Conference, Bugaje lamented that the North faces serious challenges that are not being addressed, stressing the need for collective action to prevent total collapse.

He lamented, “It’s worrying and disturbing. We need to sit down and address these issues.”

Bugaje noted that insecurity has spread, frustrating trade, commerce, and agriculture, while public institutions decay and fail in service delivery.

According to Bugaje, the state of infrastructure, particularly electricity, is epileptic, with neighboring Niger Republic faring better.

He believed, “The social sector is the worst hit, as human capital dwindles, and there are no jobs for the largely unemployable youth. In short, Nigeria is simply not working.”

Bugaje criticized shameless politicians who bask in false glory, reading empty speeches, and entice religious leaders with money, drawing them into a violent political culture.

He noted that Nigerians face a bleak future, with 20 million out-of-school children, mostly in the North, and nearly 60% of students in tertiary institutions unable to return to school.

Bugaje emphasized that leadership is Nigeria’s primary problem and called for a consensus among northern elites to tackle the region’s challenges.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Tom Maiyashi, observed that the North is on the verge of collapse, urging northerners to unite and save the region for future generations.
