Rivers United head coach, Finidi George, is aiming for a strong start to the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The Port Harcourt-based team is set to face the reigning champions, Remo Stars, in the season opener scheduled for Friday.

This eagerly awaited first match of the season will take place at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

Last season, both clubs competed fiercely for the title, with Remo Stars securing the championship for the first time.

Rivers United finished as runners-up, trailing Daniel Ogunmodede’s team by 10 points.

Finidi acknowledges the challenge ahead but remains hopeful his squad can begin the season with a victory.

“We’re playing the reigning champions, and so it will be a tough one but being they’re playing away from home we will see how we can capitalize on that advantage to see how we can pull off a surprise victory,” Finidi was quoted by the NPFL media.
