The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given its stamp of approval for the establishment of Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, Oferekpe. This milestone was marked by the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, presenting the letter of recognition to Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State in Abuja.
With this approval, the university becomes the 66th state university in the country and the 278th university in the Nigerian University System. The NUC has also notified relevant stakeholders, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, National Youth Service Corps, and Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
However, the university will not commence academic activities just yet. The NUC boss emphasized that a resource verification process must be completed first. “We will still have to undertake what is called resource verification, and the Commission will visit when the university is ready,” Ribadu explained. This process involves assessing the university’s infrastructure, classrooms, library, staffing, and overall state of affairs.
Governor Nwifuru welcomed the approval, noting that the establishment of the university was conceived in 2021 to increase access to quality and affordable tertiary education in the state. He assured us that the state government has already invested in constructing strategic buildings, including the Senate building, staff quarters, students’ hostels, faculty buildings, and university library.
The governor also highlighted the importance of manpower in driving the university’s developmental strides, revealing that principal officers have been appointed. With the NUC’s approval and the state government’s support, Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology is poised to make a significant impact in the education sector.
“On the gradual take-off of the university, the state government has already injected funds towards the construction of some strategic buildings.
“As of today, structures like the Senate building, the staff quarters, the students’ hostels, the faculty buildings, and the university library, among others, are at various stages of completion,” he said.
The establishment of the university is expected to bridge the technical manpower gap in the state, providing residents with access to quality tertiary education. With the state government’s commitment to funding the university and the NUC’s support, Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology is set to become a hub for academic excellence and innovation.
