Students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife staged a protest against the invitation of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to speak at a university event. The students condemned Wike’s political record, describing him as a symbol of corruption and repression.

“We believe his presence on campus is an affront to the values this institution stands for,” the protesting students argued. They demanded that the university revoke Wike’s invitation and declare him _persona non grata_

The protest escalated, leading to the arrest of two student leaders, Ejike Kelechi and Oladepo Joshua, by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives attached to Wike’s security detail. Despite the disruption, the event eventually went ahead with an increased security presence.

The incident has raised questions about university autonomy, the politicisation of academic platforms, and the space for dissent in Nigeria’s public institutions.
