Twenty Lagos West lawmakers have reportedly thrown their support behind former Deputy Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, to keep her position as Speaker.
The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) reached the decision during an emergency meeting with Lagos State House of Assembly members on Monday to address the ongoing leadership problem.
Recall that the House of Assembly crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 Assembly members dismissed the prior Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, in absentia due to claims of financial embezzlement, misbehaviour, and highhandedness.
Obasa was replaced by Meranda, eliciting mixed emotions among GAC members, party supporters, and loyalists of the MP representing Agege constituency 1.
The key Monday meeting, which took place at Lagos House, Marina, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s official house, was led by GAC leader Pa Tajudeen Olusi.
According to Vanguard, throughout the hours-long discussion, which was attended by several GAC members and Assembly politicians, there was overwhelming support for Meranda’s ongoing leadership despite resistance.
The importance of regional balance in Assembly leadership was discussed extensively. With the current Governor and freshly elected Speaker from Lagos Central, some GAC members proposed transferring the Speakership to Lagos West, but the notion did not gain support.
Approximately 20 members from Lagos West stayed steady in their support for Meranda, rejecting the GAC’s plan and effectively cementing her position as Speaker.
A source at the meeting said,“The attempt to replace Meranda as Speaker failed. The discussions mainly focused on balancing the leadership between senatorial districts.”
According to reports, Obasa has the support of influential members of the Tinubu family and caucus, who have been lobbying the GAC to take action.
