After a teacher allegedly asked Monday Ariyo, a pupil at the Obada Grammar School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, to perform 162 frog leaps and hit him 24 times with a cane for breaking a dustbin, he passed away.

Adetoun, an activist, posted about the incident on Instagram on Friday.

A dustbin was allegedly brought to Ariyo’s class by the instructor, who instructed the pupils not to break it, according to Adetoun.

According to her account, the teacher was reportedly enraged by Ariyo’s light-hearted retort that the dustbin was purchased using the kids’ funds.

The principal reportedly received the teacher’s report and ordered the student to be disciplined.

Following the principal’s instructions, the instructor allegedly gave Ariyo 162 canings, causing the pupil to fall and collapse.

Adetoun added that Ariyo was already dead when the instructor and a few other school employees who were on the scene took him to the hospital for treatment.

In a Friday phone interview with PUNCH Online, Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the event and stated that the victim was pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre in the state capital of Abeokuta.

She said that, in contrast to stories that she was beaten 162 times with a cane, Ariyo was forced to execute 162 frog hops and received 24 cane strokes.

She said, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention and he died today (October 25). The deceased body has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy. An investigation is ongoing.”
