The Ikwere people of Rivers State have been urged to support Senator Azuta-Mbata, the new Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, by Engr. Ikenna Ellis Ezenekwe, the President General of all Igbo-speaking people in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, under the auspices of the Igbo Community Association, ICA.

Ezenekwe commended the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for holding an election that demonstrated Igbo togetherness in a statement provided to ZINGTIE on Monday.

Since Azuta-Mbata’s rise, there has been unease in Ikwere, with some natives criticising him for taking the position.

Ezenekwe, however, took advantage of the occasion to address escalating tensions and warn against divisiveness.

He asked the people of Ikwerre to provide a peaceful environment for the next Ohanaeze leader.

“Ikwere is Igbo. It has always been Igbo, and will remain Igbo. We are together and we speak the same language. No more divisions within us,”

In his declaration, Ezenekwe emphasised the importance of unity among all communities who speak Igbo.

He remarked in response to the election results, “We, Ndị Igbo in Abuja, are very pleased and delighted with the outcome of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo national election.

“It shows that we are together in unison, and that whether we find ourselves in Rivers, Delta, Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, or Anambra States, we remain together as one family of Igbo-speaking people.”

Looking back at Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s history, Ezenekwe recalled how it began in the 1930s when it was founded in Lagos as the Lagos Igbo Union.

He described how, in 1948, at a convention in Port Harcourt, it changed its name to the Igbo State Union, with the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe serving as its first president general.

Under the direction of Dr. Francis Akanu from Afikpo, Ebonyi State, the organisation was renamed Ohanaeze Ndigbo in 1979 after he recognised more advancements over the decades.

According to Ezenekwe, the foundations of Ohanaeze Ndigbo represent solidarity, fortitude, and a dedication to furthering the interests of the Igbo people.

He claims that as the recently elected Ohanaeze leader assumes his position, everyone will be watching to see how he navigates the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in order to bring the Igbo people together and further their interests globally.

He promised the new Ohanaeze leadership the full support of the Igbo Community Association in Abuja. He emphasised how crucial the ICA’s grassroots network of more than 78 units dispersed throughout the FCT is strategically to supporting the initiatives of the new administration.

“As the President General of Ndigbo in the Federal Capital Territory under the auspices of ICA, I and the ICA have pledged to support and cooperate with the new leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“We will draw on our grassroots strength to support the new leadership. Igbo Community Association in Abuja understands the need to be united against odds staked against the Igbos,” he affirmed.
