The Edo State administration has clarified that Governor Monday Okpebholo did not want to disparage the former Labour Party presidential candidate when he advised Peter Obi not to travel to the state without his consent.
According to Fred Itua, Okpebholo’s chief press secretary, the governor made the remark in accordance with official procedure.
The statement was made by the governor on Friday when he was meeting with defectors.
Nigerians widely denounced Okpebholo’s statement, pointing out that the governor was not familiar with the constitution.
Ituah said that Okpebholo must show respect for Obi and all Nigerians.
The spokesman for the governor of Edo said in part: “Where misunderstandings arise, it is the responsibility of leaders to clarify, not to condemn. And that is what this moment calls for: clarity.
“The governor’s comment was not an attack. It was a statement borne out of official protocol, not personal bias.
“Let this moment not divide us but deepen our resolve for understanding.
“Let it remind us that even in disagreement, we must preserve our common humanity.”
