Dr. Wole Oluyede, a well-known physician, has won the Ekiti State governorship primary election for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Thousands of party supporters, including the 535 delegates chosen from the State’s 177 wards, flocked to the Ado-Ekiti poll site for the PDP Primary poll, which was hotly contested.
To ensure law and order, the election center was strongly guarded by security personnel, including members of the army, police, civil defense, and Mopol.
The poll started at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and ended at precisely 1:49 a.m. on Sunday.
Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, the chairman of the Primary Election Committee and the lawmaker for the Gombe North Senatorial District, proclaimed Oluyede the victor with 279 votes, defeating Funmilayo Ogun with 17 and Funso Ayeni with 239.
Peter Obafemi, a candidate, withdrew for Oluyede, stating that he did it for the sake of the party’s harmony rather than his own interests.
He characterized Oluyede as a man of integrity who, should he be chosen as the party’s nominee, possesses the skill and agility to lead the party to victory.
Dr. Oluyede praised the process’s spirit of justice and openness in his acceptance speech, characterizing the result as a collaborative victory for all PDP members.
The candidate thanked the PDP Southwest leader, Engineer Seyi Makinde, and National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, for their dedication to a fair primary.
He urged people to band together in order to advance Ekiti and restore good administration to the state, promising to restore hope, rebuild trust, and free Ekiti from the hold of misrule under the All Progressive Congress (APC).
“Today marks a victory not just for me, but for every member of our great party in Ekiti State. In this election, there are no losers, only partners in progress and champions of democracy. The spirit of maturity, sincerity and fairness shown in this primary demonstrates that true change is coming to Ekiti.
“Your leadership has strengthened our faith in democracy. To my fellow aspirants, I salute your courage and sportsmanship. This victory belongs to all of us. Now, we must unite as one family to deliver the real victory, the PDP victory in the governorship election.” he added
Funsho Ayeni, an aspirant, welcomed the party’s efforts but pointed out that the process was tainted by manipulation and pledged to use the internal system to make adjustments.
Tunji Odeyemi, the PDP Chairman in Ekiti State, was pleased with how well the primary went and described it as a significant step toward the party’s objective of taking the state back from the APC.
Odeyemi urged all candidates to stay together and commended party members for their perseverance over the lengthy voting day, which spanned from early in the morning until the early hours of the next day.
He said: “To God be the glory, a winner has emerged and that has been our target since I became chairman. Many thought this primary would lead to a crisis, but we have shown otherwise. With God and our collective vision, we will take over the governance of Ekiti State.
“Only one person can occupy the seat. Now that a candidate has emerged, we must reconcile and move forward together to win the election. We have all it takes to take over the governance of Ekiti State”.
