The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has won 16 out of the 18 chairmanship posts in the local government elections in Ondo State.
Joseph Aeemo, the chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), made this announcement on Sunday at the commission’s Akure offices.
Results from Owo LGA are anticipated, according to Aeemo, even if the rescheduled election is taking place in Ondo West LGA.
Only twelve political parties ran for the chairmanship and councillorship positions in Saturday’s elections, according to ZINGTIE.
The Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, declared its intention to boycott the election prior to the poll, stating that it does not trust the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission to hold a legitimate election.
Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, and Labour Party are among the 12 political parties that ran in the election.
Other parties include Zenith Labour Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, National Rescue Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Prior to Saturday’s vote, the state held its most recent council election on August 23, 2020, and the elected politicians’ terms ended on August 22, 2023.
Since then, civil servants—more especially, the Heads of Local Government Administrations—have been in charge of running the state’s 18 council regions.
However, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission ultimately set January 18, 2025, as the date for the conduct of the election after multiple postponements.
