Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has directed the immediate arrest of members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade involved in a shooting incident near Emeka Offor Plaza in the Onitsha Main Market area.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, the governor has ordered that the implicated operatives be turned over to the police for prosecution. He also assured the public that full medical support would be provided for those injured in the incident.
The OCHA Brigade, which is tasked with enforcing environmental and sanitation regulations across the state, has often been criticized for alleged misconduct, including harassment, extortion, and use of excessive force.
Tensions flared on Tuesday when members of the brigade reportedly discharged firearms during an enforcement operation, triggering widespread panic in the crowded commercial district. Eyewitnesses claimed that multiple people were affected, including a pregnant woman.
Commissioner Mefor confirmed the event and stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation at the market.
“We appreciate the swift intervention of the Police, who have restored calm and order to the area. An investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“Regrettably, one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation. The other victims are currently receiving treatment and are responding positively,” the commissioner said.
