OPay Digital Services Limited has unveiled a ₦60 million scholarship programme for students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), aimed at easing financial burdens and promoting academic excellence.
The initiative was formally launched on Tuesday with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the fintech company and the university, represented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Haruna Musa. The project was facilitated by the Students’ Union Government (SUG), under the leadership of Abdullahi Usman Baba, in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Commending the gesture, Professor Musa praised OPay for its choice of BUK as a beneficiary. “This scholarship will go a long way in boosting the morale of our students,” he said. “I urge the beneficiaries to use this opportunity wisely, and I encourage OPay to sustain this generous gesture.
Speaking on behalf of the company, OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Mr. Itoro Udo, described the programme as part of the fintech’s long-term commitment to youth empowerment through education. “BUK is one of 20 universities in Nigeria selected for this 10-year scheme,” he explained. “Every year, 20 students will receive ₦300,000 each. With over 16 million active users in Nigeria, OPay remains committed to driving both financial inclusion and educational development.”
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, also applauded the move, calling it “timely and highly impactful”. He added: “Many students face significant financial obstacles in their pursuit of higher education, and this intervention will make a real difference.”
The scholarship, expected to run consistently over the next decade, has been hailed as a potential model for private-sector involvement in strengthening higher education in Nigeria.
