A report from Punch News states that on Friday, February 6, 2026, a considerable political divide has deepened in the Abia North Senatorial District. This intensifying discord encompasses Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and the Ohafia Youth Association, arising from lingering grievances linked to the 2023 general elections and the changing dynamics approaching the 2027 elections.
The youth organisation has reaffirmed its position that the lawmaker is considered unwelcome in the Ohafia community, referencing previous actions they believe caused suffering for their people.
This announcement was made at an event at the Zone 9 Police Headquarters in Umuahia, after an invitation related to a petition the senator allegedly submitted against the group concerning claims of cyberbullying.
Chika Nnate, serving as the association’s spokesperson, highlighted that the young people in different Ohafia settlements have come together to call for accountability.
Their resentment is rooted in the 2023 electoral cycle, when the region was purportedly depicted as a center for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Nnate contended that this branding led to the extensive mobilization of security personnel, fostering a climate of fear and hindering numerous residents from voting.
“What we are saying is simple: you cannot label us an IPOB zone and then come back to campaign in our land,” Nnate said.
It mirrors a profound sense of betrayal among the youth, who feel that the labeling was a calculated tactic that stripped the electorate of their rights.
The association also argued that the excessive security presence resulted in irregularities in the election outcomes, asserting that numerous wards reported zero participation even though official counts were released afterward. The Ohafia Youth Association also voiced their discontent regarding the quality of representation they have received, in addition to these electoral concerns.
They claimed that the senator has consistently ignored Ohafia in his development plans, pointing out the absence of concrete constituency projects like infrastructure enhancements or social empowerment initiatives.
While demonstrating, the young people bore placards calling for transparency and clear evidence of any legislative actions in the Ohafia Local Government Area.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s media office rejected these allegations as completely unfounded and misleading. His representatives asserted that the senator still maintains a strong relationship with the people of Abia North and is dedicated to the region’s advancement.
They contended that his service record encompasses all areas within the district. Nonetheless, political analysts indicate that this clash foreshadows the 2027 elections, emphasizing an escalating tension as various factions start to align themselves for the upcoming political cycle.
