The National President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, or NULGE, Aliyu Haruna Kankara, was allegedly sent into the state to play a partisan role in support of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, according to the All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter in Osun State.
In a press statement released on Saturday by the Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi and obtained by ZINGTIE, the APC urged NULGE’s national leadership to resist being influenced by what it dubbed the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s misleading narrative about the situation of local government issues in Osun.
The statement said, “It is imperative to educate the national President of NULGE, who was hoodwinked by the Osun State government under the pretence that all is well with NULGE in the state.”
The APC claims that Osun’s local government workers are currently split, with a breakaway group led by Tirimisiyu Adekunle and Akinkunmi Adepoju functioning under the name of the Association of Concerned Local Government Employees, ACLGE.
The APC accused the state chapter of NULGE of ignoring a Court of Appeal ruling issued on February 10, 2025, and the party expressed surprise that the state chapter had neglected to inform the national president about its politicization and alliance with the PDP.
“The leadership of the politicised NULGE has refused to resume work since the reinstatement of APC council chairmen and councillors, openly showing solidarity with Governor Adeleke’s administration,” Olabisi stated.
Kankara and his executive members were allegedly taken to Osun, according to the APC. “to play dirty politics far removed from the real situation in local government councils across the state.”
Furthermore, the APC charged that the factional NULGE was not functioning as a neutral labor organization that represented the interests of workers, but rather as an opposition movement against the APC.
The party also cited violent acts, saying that in earlier attacks, thugs killed five APC members and Hon. Remi Abass, the reinstated chairman of the Irewole Local Government.
The APC accused the Osun chapter of harming the state’s third tier of government by ignoring its responsibilities for more than two months and urged the national NULGE leadership to convince it to return to work.
The Osun State Government allegedly disregarded explicit warnings from the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police not to hold local government elections in the state, the party reminded the union.
The national NULGE was cautioned by the APC not to support measures that defy court orders.
“Encouraging brazen disobedience to the Court of Appeal judgement will have grave and unmitigated consequences on the integrity of the NULGE,” it said.
According to a ZINGTIE article, the National Executive Council of NULGE supported the union’s Osun State chapter when it decided to stop providing services because of the state’s ongoing local government crisis.
Aliyu Haruna Kankara, the National President of NULGE, said he fully supports the decision, saying it indicates the leadership’s dedication to the welfare of its members, during a meeting held on Friday at the Osun State Government Secretariat in Abere.
Kankara highlighted that Osun State’s minimum wage structure is among the best in Nigeria and praised the government for putting workers’ wellbeing first.
