The recent demands for a state of emergency in Osun State have been rejected by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who characterized them as an ongoing attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to illegitimately gain control of the government.

In light of recent developments in the state, some civil society groups had appealed for emergency rule, and the governor was responding to these appeals.

Nevertheless, Adeleke characterized the groups as “faceless” and claimed that the call was a desperate attempt organized by former governor Gboyega Oyetola and APC gubernatorial candidate Bola Oyebamiji.

On Saturday, in Osogbo, Adeleke released a statement accusing the APC of being the main cause of unrest in Osun. He alleged that the party had crippled local government administration, mishandled council finances, and made unlawful deployments of security forces in the state.

He claims that the former governor and his associates are now “the most hated political actors in Osun” because of their actions at the local government level.

“The APC seized local government funds, mismanaged the same, and forcefully occupied the councils, all in a bid to provoke violence and conflict. This is a deliberate strategy to create chaos and blame it on the Adeleke-led administration,” the governor said.

Adeleke asserted that his administration has continued to uphold peace in the state, despite what he characterized as open confrontations and ongoing illegal activities by individuals affiliated with the APC.

He stated that the demand for emergency rule arose from frustration following the failure of their supposed plans.

“Osun APC has failed in its evil bid to destabilise the state, hence their resort to an open call for emergency declaration, for which there is no basis or justification,” he stated.

The governor challenged efforts to attribute the crisis to his administration, asserting that the instability was caused by what he called the illegal occupation of local government councils by APC-backed chairmen whose terms had ended.

He also accused the APC of unlawfully seizing local government funds, breaching financial regulations. He pointed out that his administration had intervened to pay local government employees who were reportedly left without payment.

Adeleke stated that his management of the crisis has garnered praise from multiple sources and noted that Osun has progressed past the time of political violence.

“No individual or group will be allowed to further disturb the peace of Osun State. Anybody found creating public mayhem will face the full wrath of the law,” he warned.

The governor revealed that he had instructed the state Commissioner of Police to oversee and avert any efforts to embroil the state in conflict, while also urging the Inspector-General of Police to be aware of the circumstances.

He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in by admonishing former governor Oyetola, cautioning that the minister’s actions could damage the Presidency’s reputation.

“Those seeking power should face the electorate. Political power is secured through the people; no backdoor access will work,” Adeleke added.
