Twenty-five of the 26 members of the Osun State House of Assembly have pledged their allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The action takes place as the state’s party is now being rocked by a wave of defections.
All of the lawmakers, who were elected on the PDP platform, denied rumors that they would follow in the footsteps of federal politicians who recently quit the party.
The Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, stated during a press conference in Osogbo on Wednesday that the entire PDP caucus in the state assembly was still unified, devoted, and totally committed to Governor Adeleke and the party.
“The twenty-five members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the PDP are united, loyal, and fully committed to the government of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke and to the party that brought us here, which is the PDP,” Egbedun declared.
He said the members were committed to upholding their voters’ confidence and providing good governance in collaboration with the Adeleke government, and he called the reports of potential defections from the House baseless.
“There is no division in this House. There is no defection. There is no crisis. The rumours flying around are simply rumours, and we are not in the business of chasing shadows,” he said.
According to the Speaker, the Assembly members would continue to firmly back Adeleke’s 2026 reelection campaign and seek to increase the PDP’s influence in the state legislature.
“We, the honourable members, are men of honour. We are not for sale. We are not moved by noise or pressure. We hold the mandate of our people and we intend to keep that trust with dignity, loyalty, and a clear conscience,” Egbedun affirmed.
Ahead of the upcoming elections, he added, the lawmakers are prepared to convince the APC’s sole opposition member to join the PDP.
“Our goal is not just to retain power but to deepen party unity and advance developmental governance,” he added.
Five federal lawmakers elected on the PDP ticket resigned shortly after the most recent development.
Concerns about a potential mass defection throughout the state political landscape have been raised by these resignations.
Senator Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central), Oluwole Oke (Oriade/Obokun), Abimbola Ajilesoro (Ife Central/East/North/South), and Sanya Ominrin (Ijesa South Federal Constituency (Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Atakunmosa East, and Atakunmosa West) are among the individuals who have departed from the PDP.
Recently, the members of the National Assembly resigned in public by sending personally signed letters to their ward chairmen.
Due to their resignations, the Osun PDP no longer controls the whole Osun East Senatorial District, which includes the 10 local government areas of Ife, Ijesa North, and Ijesa South Federal Constituencies.
