According to assertions from both parties, violent clashes between members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have left at least five persons dead and more than fifty injured in Osun State.
The Osun APC’s Monday attempts to restore evicted council officials to their positions across the local government secretariats have been blamed for the current violence, according to ZINGTIE.
In a statement by Hezekiah Oladele Bamiji, Osun PDP Director of Media, the party stated that APC thugs, commanded by a recognized political figure, carried out planned attacks on its members in numerous local government areas, including Boripe, Olaoluwa, Isokan, and Ilesa West.
“In Boripe, particularly in Iragbiji, two PDP members, Damilare Olumide (Ege) and Oyebamiji Taiwo, were gruesomely murdered. Over twenty others sustained injuries while preparing for a political rally,” he claimed.
The APC members allegedly opened fire on its followers with the help of armed security guards, the PDP added, disrupting party activities and creating widespread terror.
Abdulahi Olawale Ayanfe and Olaleye Akano, two more PDP members in the Ola-Ouwa local government council area, were allegedly shot dead, while other members were reportedly wounded.
“The violence escalated in Ilesa West, where APC thugs stormed a PDP rally and opened fire indiscriminately. Several chieftains, including Hon. Tunde Ẹjẹ and Hon. Kasali, were seriously injured, along with an innocent vendor,” he alleged.
The PDP, on the other hand, demanded an impartial investigation into the attacks and maintained that it was the target of politically motivated violence.
“We will not be intimidated. Justice must be served,” Bamiji stated.
The PDP-led Osun State Government is accused of planning the attacks, while the APC has refuted the accusations.
APC Chairman Tajudeen Lawal accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of attacking APC members at a press conference in Osogbo after an Appeal Court decision reinstated the party’s fired local government chairmen.
The APC demanded that Amotekun, a regional security group, be outlawed because its members allegedly helped PDP agents carry out the attacks.
“Amotekun has become a political weapon in Osun. The Inspector General of Police must act,” Omowaiye added.
Remi Omowaiye, an APC chieftain from Osun, lamented the killings of APC members in the state.
“They are killing our people. Hon. Remi Abass, the elected chairman of Irewole Local Government, was murdered this morning by gunmen,” he stated.
Omowaiye further asserted that a supposed PDP thug had shot at and attacked his convoy when it was traveling to Osogbo.
“PDP thugs, led by a House of Assembly member, fired at my vehicle. The bullet holes are visible,” he said.
Jamiu Olawumi, the former Special Adviser on Education, called on President Bola Tinubu and security forces to step in.
“The state is descending into chaos. The government must protect all citizens, not just its party members.
“Our chairmen and councillors will remain in office. We will not bow to threats,” said Prince Adebayo Adeleke, former Commissioner for Local Government,” he stated.
Nonetheless, both parties urged law enforcement to act quickly to stop additional violence in the state and demanded justice.
