The Labour Party’s (LP) Osun State Chapter has declared that it will not be participating in the state’s local government election on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters in Osogbo on Friday, Adebayo Bello, the party’s State Chairman, made the announcement.
Bello stated that the party was pulling out of the election because the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) had not made sufficient security arrangements to ensure a peaceful election.
However, in order to give OSSIEC enough time to get ready for the election, he advocated delaying it by one or two months.
He claimed that the postponement would also give the electoral umpire time to settle any legal disputes pertaining to the election’s conduct.
Oyebode Babalola, one of the party’s candidates for chairman, stated that LP would not run in the election because of security concerns.
Babalola requested for the poll to be postponed, pointing out that the party was unsure about the security arrangements.
“Although, we are ready for the election, but we are not going to participate, due to security concern.
“We have seen some traces that the election might be disrupted tomorrow and we are not ready to put the lives of our people in jeopardy,” he said.
