Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has called on women to instill positive values in their children as a means of combating harmful behaviours that threaten the fabric of society.

Speaking during the grand finale of the 2025 August Women Meeting in Umuahia, the governor urged participants to take a firm stand against drug abuse, the unhealthy pursuit of wealth, and criminality.

He emphasized the vital role women play as key influencers in society and noted that the success of the state’s social reorientation efforts largely depends on their involvement.

Expressing concern over the increasing number of youths falling into crime, addiction, and lack of discipline, Governor Otti stressed that urgent action is required to reverse the trend.

“We are also losing many young people to crime, substance abuse, and impatience. This has to change immediately,” Otti said.

He appealed to the women to work with his administration to realize its goals, noting that 60% of the N2 billion agricultural fund would be allocated to support women in farming.

The governor also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality through public health education and the provision of quality healthcare services for expectant mothers, nursing women, and their infants.

Governor Otti applauded his wife, Mrs. Chidinma Otti, for spearheading a movement for the empowerment of women in Abia. He also revealed that he had ensured newly recruited female teachers were posted to locations close to their residences to support work-life balance.
