Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, participated in the Blue Economy and Finance Forum held in Monaco on Sunday, June 8, 2025, alongside several global leaders and dignitaries.

In a statement released on Monday by Dr. Bolaji Akinola, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, the event was said to have taken place ahead of the upcoming United Nations Oceans Conference scheduled for Nice, France. The forum was hosted by Prince Albert II of Monaco.

The high-profile gathering, held at the renowned Grimaldi Forum, attracted significant global attention. Notable attendees included Prince William, the Prince of Wales; French President Emmanuel Macron; and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, along with numerous other leaders and international delegates.

Centered on advancing a regenerative blue economy and sustainable ocean financing, discussions focused on the pressing need for collaborative global efforts to protect marine environments and ensure the responsible use of ocean-based resources.

Deliberations emphasized the importance of fast-tracking the move toward a resilient ocean economy, mobilizing financial support for Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and integrating marine research into policy frameworks to safeguard the world’s oceans.

Nigeria’s engagement at the forum reflected its increasing dedication to responsible ocean management, maritime environmental stewardship, and climate resilience through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

As the sector becomes increasingly vital for both economic growth and environmental health, Minister Oyetola’s participation highlighted Nigeria’s readiness to take an active role on the global stage and to build strong partnerships that encourage innovation, sustainable investments, and best practices in its marine and coastal zones.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, the Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s pledge to sustainably manage and protect oceanic resources, while contributing to the development of inclusive, science-led, and economically sound ocean strategies.
