Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), the recently appointed Sole Administrator, is allegedly taking steps to designate administrators to lead the 23 local government areas, which has caused a new wave of panic in Rivers State.

According to information obtained, Ibas was purportedly given the responsibility of establishing a leadership structure at the state’s local government level by President Bola Tinubu when he was appointed.

And that local government administrators were about to be appointed by the administrator who had pledged peace in the state.

A source with knowledge of the development expressed regret that Ibas is attempting to conduct an action that is against all existing laws, despite the Nigerian Constitution’s explicit provisions and the recent Supreme Court ruling upholding LG autonomy.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that if the action were to be taken, it would be a betrayal of democratic values and a breach of the Supreme Court’s decision, which underlined that elected people, not appointed officials, must run local governments.

According to the sources, a list of accused administrators’ names has already been produced, which has raised concerns about a planned effort to thwart the people’s will.

It was discovered that a significant political figure in the state had benefited from the appointments.

But once the appointments are made, people on the opposing sides of the political spectrum are preparing for a confrontation.

The source claims that such a move could lead to a crisis in the local government system and create a risky precedent for executive overreach.

The source said: “Nigerians must remain vigilant against this unconstitutional manoeuvre, as it threatens the foundation of grassroots democracy.

“Any attempt to impose unelected administrators on LGs must be met with firm resistance from law-abiding citizens, political stakeholders, and civil society groups.

“Will the rule of law prevail, or will impunity reign? The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining whether democracy holds firm or is trampled upon.”
