Former members of the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly have been urged by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resign from their positions after defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Among the 50 politicians who formally joined the APC on Saturday were the lawmakers, most of whom were from Southern Kaduna. They were welcomed by Governor Uba Sani, former Governor Ramalan Yero, and former Senator Danjuma La’ah during a stakeholders’ meeting in Murtala Square, Kaduna.
Maria Dogo, the PDP’s Kaduna State Publicity Secretary, denounced the defections in a statement released on Sunday, calling them a breach of the public’s confidence.
Although the Nigerian Constitution allows for freedom of association, she underlined that elected officials who change parties must give up their posts unless their original party is experiencing internal division.
“According to Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the Constitution, serving legislators who defect to another party must vacate their seats,” Dogo stated.
Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly were encouraged by the PDP to declare the seats of the defectors vacant and call for bye-elections to be held by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Alleging that some defectors were only looking for automatic seats for the 2026 elections after losing the 2022 primary or failing the PDP’s zoning procedures, the party condemned the defections as politically motivated.
Dogo also criticized Governor Sani’s administration for hosting lavish receptions for defectors rather than tackling governance concerns, accusing the APC-led government of misaligning priorities.
“Our people are yearning for a return to the PDP years when the economy thrived and citizens could afford their basic needs. Therefore, no amount of defections can save the APC-led government from its imminent exit in 2027,” she stated.
The PDP assured its followers that it is still the party of choice for Kaduna citizens, reaffirming its strength and dedication to democracy in spite of the loss.
The party promised to take all required legal and constitutional actions to recover its mandates, led by Edward Masha, its state chairman.
