Human rights advocate and member of the Rivers Elders Forum, Ann-Kio Briggs, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of betraying the trust of both Rivers State residents and Nigerians at large.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television, Briggs criticized the PDP for failing to take decisive action during the state’s prolonged political turmoil, leaving citizens to deal with the fallout.
While discussing recent political developments in Rivers, she expressed disappointment that, despite the unwavering support the PDP has received from the state since 1999, the party failed to show strong leadership when it was most needed.
“I definitely feel, as a stakeholder and elder, let down by the PDP because, since 1999, we have always voted, including me, for the PDP,” Briggs said.
Briggs went on to say that the PDP’s internal conflicts and leadership struggles significantly weakened its position in the state. She added that the party’s inaction played a major role in deepening the political instability in Rivers.
According to her, the failure to respond appropriately allowed a preventable crisis to escalate, causing unnecessary damage to the state.
