According to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River, the party’s next state chairman would not come from the section that supports Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
This is the stance taken by the party’s Cross River South Senatorial District after its Wednesday caucus meeting in Calabar.
The conference was called to discuss urgent and significant political developments that impact the senatorial district and the state as a whole, according to Mr. Asuquo Ekpo, the PDP’s vice chairman for the state.
In a statement signed by Ekpo, the party denounced the resolution of the Wike-aligned faction’s Abuja meeting, which demanded an extension of the current party chairman’s term in the state.
He pointed out that the state executive was rife with strife and polarizing tendencies under Venatius Ikem’s leadership.
He reiterated the caucus’s pledge to hold a state congress on September 27 that is inclusive and free of rancour.
He claims that the caucus accepts the current state party offices assigned to the southern senatorial district in accordance with the national template and the resolution of the Cross River special stakeholders conference.
“The caucus resolved to present a united and formidable front at the forthcoming state congress and recalled the unfortunate experiences of 2023 when the party lost in the South.
“Consequently, the caucus directed all local government areas in the district to consult widely and put forward their most competent representatives for the Sept. 27 congress.
“The caucus further reaffirmed its commitment to engage with different local government areas, with a view to accommodating or realigning the zoning as the circumstances may require.”
He went on to say that the caucus praised Mrs. Amina Bryhm, the National Woman Leader, for her brave and resolute actions to guarantee the PDP’s stability in the state.
