The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership in Taraba State’s Yangtu Special Development Area has denied charges that the recent appointment of the area’s Coordinator and other key officials was not legitimate, calling the accusations “mischievous and baseless.”
The statement comes after a publication known as “Concerned Yangtu Youths” claimed that Andetarang Irammae, a single person, planned the appointments without seeking input from others.
The PDP rejected the allegations as “reckless fabrications” meant to deceive the people and sow division in a joint statement signed by PDP Yangtu Chairman Sabo Shamaki and PDP Zonal Women Leader (Southern Zone), Ladi Danjuma, which was made available to reporters in Jalingo on Saturday.
According to the statement, party executives, traditional leaders, youth organizations, and the PDP Elders Forum were consulted extensively before Joel Rimamscap, along with the Deputy Coordinator and Secretary, was chosen as Coordinator. This decision was made using a well-established zoning methodology.
“The law governing the Yangtu Special Development Area recognizes four villages, Jenuwa Kogi, Kwambai, Jenuwa Gida, and Bika with key offices rotating among them. The PDP leadership noted that while Jenuwa Gida held the Coordinator position in 2022, it was Jenuwa Kogi’s turn in the current cycle,” the statement read.
According to the party, the nominations were sent to the state government for confirmation after receiving the support of prominent traditional leaders, such as Joshua Samari of Bika Chiefdom and Kwambai Chiefdom’s Kwe Emmanuel Ikoti.
The PDP denounced the suggestion that Irammae was the only person involved in the appointment process, describing it as a “laughable attempt” to sabotage an open, community-driven selection process.
The statement also addressed allegations made against Mrs. Hauwa Kwena, a member of the PDP, questioning her alleged electoral performance and influence.
The party claims that official INEC records indicate she only received 31 votes in her voting place during the previous election, while Irammae supposedly received over 1,000 votes.
The party’s leadership further explained that Tina Musa, who was previously the PDP’s Deputy National Women Leader, took Mrs. Kwena’s place and is no longer a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
“She must publicly disassociate herself if she has no involvement in this publication,” the message cautioned, implying that keeping quiet might be interpreted as imitation.
The PDP urged citizens and party members to ignore what it referred to as “the handiwork of mischief-makers,” confirming its dedication to justice, inclusivity, and development in Yangtu.
“No amount of propaganda will distract us from our responsibility to serve the people of Yangtu,” the statement read.
