UEFA has clarified the reason Arsenal were not awarded a late penalty during their Champions League semi-final first-leg clash against Atletico Madrid.

Eberechi Eze, who was introduced as a substitute in the second half, went down inside the penalty area in the 78th minute.

Referee Danny Makkelie initially pointed to the spot, ruling against Atletico defender David Hancko.

However, despite contact being made with Eze’s foot, the Video Assistant Referee intervened and advised Makkelie to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

After examining several replays, the referee reversed his earlier decision and cancelled the penalty.

The decision drew a strong reaction from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who described it as “completely unacceptable”.

In a brief statement, UEFA said: “Atleti player, No 17, did not commit a foul on the opponent.”
