The presidential flag bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has dismissed concerns over reported disagreements within the party, describing such developments as a normal part of political organisations.
Obi made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview broadcast by Nevon Media, where he responded to questions regarding alleged tensions in the party and reactions from various political stakeholders to opposition criticism.
According to him, differences of opinion are inevitable in any organisation, including political parties, and should not automatically be interpreted as a crisis.
“In every organisation, you will have disagreements or minor issues. What matters is how they are handled. Most of the time, they are resolved and the party moves on,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also commented on concerns raised by some party members, including Aisha Yusuf, stressing that varying viewpoints and expressions of dissatisfaction are common in political settings and do not necessarily signal instability within a party.
Addressing the legal dispute involving party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo, Obi stated that the matter arose from public statements that, in his view, required a formal response.
He explained that situations of that nature often occur when allegations are made publicly and may need legal examination or clarification.
Obi emphasised the importance of responsibility and factual accuracy in political discourse.
He further maintained that public office holders and political leaders must be willing to face scrutiny and answer legitimate questions about their actions.
“As leaders, we must be open to scrutiny so the public can understand who we are and what we stand for,” he said.
The NDC presidential candidate added that leadership positions should be occupied by individuals who possess integrity, competence, and strong moral character rather than those chosen solely because of political alliances.
“It is important that those who will lead us must be people of character, integrity, competence, and proper qualification,” he said.
Obi also noted that genuine accountability requires political leaders to be prepared for both their past and present conduct to be examined whenever necessary for the public good.
His comments come days after he instituted a ₦5 billion defamation suit against Kenneth Okonkwo over remarks he considered damaging to his reputation.
Okonkwo had repeatedly questioned Obi’s political decisions, particularly his withdrawal from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and subsequent alignment with the newly established NDC.
In one of his public appearances, Okonkwo reportedly described Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso as “political conmen” for abandoning the coalition despite previously backing it.
According to court documents, the lawsuit stems from comments allegedly made during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on June 8, 2026, where Okonkwo was said to have levelled allegations of corruption and questionable political dealings against Obi.
Among the claims referenced in the suit are accusations involving an alleged ₦10 million bribe collected from House of Representatives aspirants, interference in party primary elections, and irregularities surrounding candidate selection processes.
