Former Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, has advised the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to be cautious about granting excessive control and influence to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and his loyalists within the party.

Abure gave the warning in a statement released on June 8, 2026, while commenting on reports of internal disagreements surrounding the sharing of elective positions within the NDC.

The Labour Party chieftain said the decision by the NDC leadership, under Senator Seriake Dickson, not to concede all positions requested by Obi’s camp was a wise move, drawing from the Labour Party’s experiences before and after the 2023 general elections.

According to him, several individuals who secured political offices through the Labour Party later turned against the party leadership instead of helping to strengthen and develop the platform.

“They say history usually repeats itself. Senator Dickson and Co have seen their trajectory and learnt from what happened to us,” Abure said.

He alleged that many politicians who benefited from the Labour Party’s platform eventually aligned themselves with Obi and became part of the struggles surrounding the party’s leadership structure.

Abure further claimed that the Labour Party leadership made numerous concessions ahead of the 2023 elections to accommodate Obi and many of his supporters.

“We only looked at his body language and obliged most of his supporters with tickets. Most of the tickets were given for free because we believed we were investing in those persons,” he stated.

The former chairman also accused some elected officials of supporting moves aimed at undermining the party leadership after securing victory on the Labour Party platform.

“All those elected under the party, Obi took them to fight the leadership of the party,” he said.

He stressed that political parties must maintain a fair balance in the distribution of positions and influence among members to ensure stability and internal harmony.

“It is very good for Seriake Dickson not to have given Obi supporters all they needed in the NDC. He needed to bring his own people so that when the chips are down, he will also have people that will speak and defend him,” he added.

Abure also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of playing a role in the leadership crisis that emerged within the Labour Party after the 2023 elections, alleging that certain party stakeholders embraced claims that the tenure of the party’s executives had expired.

“The leaders, particularly Peter Obi and Alex Otti, decided to take over the leadership of the party,” Abure alleged.

He maintained that his remarks were prompted by questions from members of the public regarding how the Labour Party handled its relationship with Obi and his supporters during the build-up to the 2022/2023 election cycle.
