A prominent Nigerian labour leader has died in Geneva, Switzerland, after a brief illness.
The deceased, Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Domingo Michael Adeleke, was attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) as a member of Nigeria’s official delegation.
Sources disclosed that Adeleke reportedly fell ill during the conference and was rushed for medical treatment but later passed away.
His death was confirmed by an official of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who described him as a dedicated trade unionist committed to advancing the welfare of workers.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Nigeria Labour Congress and the entire trade union movement in Nigeria, especially the 2026 Workers’ Delegates to the International Labour Conference, announce the passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke, who died today in Geneva after a brief illness while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference,” the official said.
Adeleke, a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), served as Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council, where he played a key role in labour advocacy and the promotion of workers’ rights.
The NLC noted that throughout his years of service, he remained steadfast in championing decent work conditions, social justice, and the overall wellbeing of Nigerian workers.
