Pharmacists Sound the Alarm Over What Is Happening to Nigeria’s Health Sector

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, ACPN, has raised concerns over the migration of at least 9,000 pharmacists from Nigeria to other countries in search of better opportunities.

The association described the development as worrisome and called for the provision of adequate resources and improved living conditions for professionals to curb the growing brain drain in the healthcare sector.

The ACPN National Chairman, Pharmacist Ambrose Ezeh, made the appeal during the 45th annual national scientific conference of the association held in Abuja.

Ezeh, in a statement made available to ZINGTIE at the conclusion of the conference on Sunday, disclosed that no fewer than 9,000 pharmacists had left Nigeria over the past four years.

The ACPN National Chairman also revealed that the trend had persisted in 2026, noting that more than 850 pharmacists secured letters of good standing within the first six months of the year as part of preparations to relocate to countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States.

Ezeh attributed the departure of the healthcare professionals to inadequate remuneration, delays in implementing drug distribution guidelines and poorly coordinated medicine procurement systems.

He expressed concern that the continued migration of professionals was worsening manpower shortages, with serious consequences for patient safety, healthcare delivery and the long-term sustainability of the sector.

Ezeh urged governments to strengthen the pharmaceutical industry and support executive and private-member bills designed to address some of the sector’s most persistent challenges.
