According to reports, a 56-year-old farmer in the Miango town of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State was fatally cut by herders as he attempted to prevent them from grazing on his millet plantation.
When Stephen, the deceased’s son, went to check his farm on Thursday night, he was hacked to death, according to Stephen, who confirmed the incident to reporters on Friday.
Stephen clarified that when his father arrived at the land, he saw the Fulani herders grazing their animals there, damaging the crops.
He claimed that the herders attacked him and killed him with their machetes when he tried to urge them to remove their animals off his property.
“It happened yesterday, Thursday, at about 5 pm. My father went to his farm in the Miango community, where he cultivated millet and saw some Fulani herdsmen grazing on the farm with their cows,” Stephen said.
“My father then approached them with the intention of asking them to remove their cows, as they were destroying the crops. And that’s how the herders attacked him. They used their knives and cut all his body, leaving him in a pool of his blood. And that’s how my father died eventually,” he said.
He stated that although several witnesses reported the incident to security personnel right after, they usually did not act until Friday, when they arrived to start their investigations.
“Some people have reported the incident to the security agents after my father was killed, and it was only this morning, today, Friday, that we saw the security men arrive in the house,” Stephen lamented.
