According to Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, lawmakers who want to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in order to oppose the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 are embarking on a futile endeavor.

This announcement was made in Abuja at the reception of Yusufu Buhari, the SDP’s vice presidential candidate, and Bala Mohammed Gwagwarawa, the party’s Kano State governorship candidate who had defected to the APC.

In a major political realignment before of the general election in 2027, all 36 local government chairmen and secretaries, 13 candidates for the House of Assembly, and 6 candidates for the House of Representatives who were part of the SDP’s Kano State Working Committee have also defected to the APC.

Barau disclosed that he was instrumental in enabling SDP leaders to defect, characterizing this as a significant blow to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Ahead of the 2027 elections, El-Rufai just joined the SDP and has been actively seeking new members.

Speaking to the defectors, Senator Barau said that the SDP chieftains’ decision to join the APC was a proof that any plan to use the party to oppose the APC in 2027 had failed.

“Let me start by saying that those who have been going around the country, trying to woo people to the SDP, and thinking that their effort will create a platform capable of challenging the APC in the next election—the idea is confirmed to be dead on arrival. Dead on arrival.

“Why do I say that? People have rejected that invitation. People have said no, we are not coming to your party. The former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, and others who have been mentioned have also said no. And to add salt to the injury, those already in the party are now moving to our party, the APC. The SDP is going to be empty.

“Today, the Vice Presidential candidate, the Governorship candidate in Kano State, and other heavyweights in the SDP have joined the APC,” he said.

Although he emphasized that their membership came with obligations, Barau reassured the defectors that they would receive equal treatment within the APC and urged them to be active in order to be recognized as soon as possible.

Chief Emma Eneukwu, the Deputy National Chairman (South), spoke on behalf of APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who characterized the defection as a shift “from darkness to light,” highlighting the APC’s position as a pioneer of transformation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Kabir Gaya, a former senator from Kano South Senatorial District, expressed his happiness that the Deputy Senate President was promoting the APC’s unity in Kano State and beyond.
