Osun 2026: INEC send serious warning to all political parties

In Osun State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged political parties and their candidates to ensure that their campaign activities strictly adhere to the provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act and the commission’s regulations governing political parties and electioneering activities.

This announcement follows INEC’s declaration that political campaigns for the 2026 governorship election will officially commence on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

This, according to INEC, aligns with the timetable and activity schedule approved by the commission.

This was revealed by the electoral body in a press statement signed by Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, and issued on Tuesday by Musa Olurode, the Osun INEC Public Affairs Officer.

The commission observed that the start of campaigns signifies the launch of open political activities by parties and candidates in anticipation of the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

“INEC advises political parties and their candidates to ensure that their campaign activities comply strictly with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 as well as the commission’s regulations guiding political parties and electioneering activities.

“All participants in the political process are expected to maintain decorum throughout the campaign period and avoid actions capable of threatening public peace across the state.

“Political parties, candidates, and their supporters are urged to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful and orderly manner in strict compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 and the commission’s regulations and guidelines,” the statement said.

The commission issued a particular caution regarding inflammatory rhetoric in the campaign period, underscoring that “hate speech, abusive language, and acts of violence are prohibited under the Electoral Act.”

Political actors were also urged by INEC to center their interactions with voters around policies and programs.

“Parties and candidates are advised to focus on issue-based campaigns that will enable voters to make informed choices at the polls,” the commission stated.

The statement highlighted that Dr. Mutiu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, reiterated the commission’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders such as security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media to guarantee that the Osun State governorship election on August 15, 2026, is credible, transparent, inclusive, and free from violence.
